The society was formed in 1959 by individuals who
were concerned about the future of the canal, convinced that it needed a body to
protect and promote its use. At the time the canal was under threat of closure,
and ensuring its future became the first task of the newly formed society.
Apart from the notable undertakings, the society is
constantly involved with developments along the canal and is regularly involved
on planning proposals and projects by other bodies.
The society also holds monthly meetings attended by
guest speakers, runs many events throughout the year and produces a monthly
magazine called "Broadsheet"
