The society was formed in 1959 by individuals who were concerned about the future of the canal, convinced that it needed a body to protect and promote its use. At the time the canal was under threat of closure, and ensuring its future became the first task of the newly formed society.
Apart from the notable undertakings, the society is constantly involved with developments along the canal and is regularly involved on planning proposals and projects by other bodies.
The society also holds monthly meetings attended by guest speakers, runs many events throughout the year and produces a monthly magazine called "Broadsheet"
Some of the Projects Undertaken by the society
- Gaining Conservation Area Status for the entire length of the canal.
- Saving the Tontine Hotel at Stourport from Demolition.
- Installation of Lock name Boards at all Locks along the canal.
- Saving the Stourbridge Arm from Closure.
- Preventing the demolition and subsequent involvement with the formation of the Bonded Warehouse on the Stourbridge Arm, and subsequent involvement in the formation of the Stourbridge Navigation Trust.
- Instrumental in the restoration of the "Stourbridge 16" locks.
- Erection of finger posts along the canal.
- The installation of aqueduct nameplates along the canal.
- The restoration of the Whittington Horse bridge.
- Installation of the Staffordshire and Worcestershire boundary stone. 11 Years old this year (2010).
